In the Spring Highland area of Birmingham, Alabama a strong prayer group was started by the Christian Community. Out of this prayer band, Spring Highland A.M.E. Church was organized in the home of Bro. and Sis. Spencer. Later, services were held in the basement of First Baptist Church-Airport, twice monthly, under the leadership of the late Rev. White. In 1946, Spring Highland A.M.E. Church moved moved to 1536 89th Street North, where it remained for over 60 years.

Under Presiding Elder J. B. Carter, the church became Saint Stephen A.M.E. Church - Airport. Rev. Smith was pastor at the time. On October 9, 1974, Sis. Pearl C. Pitts, Bro. Joseph Barnett and Sis. Savanna Louis filed their declaration of organization of Saint Stephen A.M.E. Church. On October 21, 1974, the certificate of incorporation was signed.

The last worship service was held at the 89th Street North location on April 29, 2007, due to a property acquisition by the Birmingham Airport Authority.  St. Stephen is currently temporarily worshiping at Hopewell AME Church, 925 44th St N, Birmingham.
